NGN Quick-Reference

The Next Generation NCLEX item types and the clinical-judgment model are described by NCSBN at ncsbn.org/nclex. Strategy only — no exam content.

Bow-tie
Work outward from the center.
One central problem; sort every cue into "expected" vs "needs attention," then pick actions that address the center. If an action doesn't change the center, it's likely a distractor.
Trend
Compare, don't memorize.
Read the earliest values first for a baseline, then judge the direction of change. A single abnormal value tells less than the slope. Narrate the trend: "BP falling, HR rising — moving the wrong way."
Cloze
Read the whole statement before touching a menu.
Drop-down blanks form a reasoning chain — a wrong first choice cascades. Decide what you'd say in plain English first, then match, rather than shopping the menus.
SATA
Judge each option independently.
Every option is its own true/false question. Ask: "Is this true and does it answer the stem?" Never eliminate an option because you think you've found "enough" correct answers.
